Five simple ways to celebrate women on March 8th

March 8th is International Women’s Day – a day to celebrate, inspire and empower. The annual event also marks a call-to-action for accelerating women’s equality. This year’s theme is #BreakTheBias:

Imagine a gender equal world.

A world free of bias, stereotypes, and discrimination.

A world that is diverse, equitable, and inclusive.

A world where difference is valued and celebrated.

Together we can forge women’s equality.

Collectively we can all #BreakTheBias.

While it can be hard to fathom how you can make an impact on a global scale, there are actually simple ways which you can celebrate International Women’s Day. Here are five ideas:

  1. Recognise a local woman-owned company. We are surrounded by so many amazing female-led businesses here in Townsville! Recognising these inspiring women can be as simple as commenting on a social media post or sending an email to congratulate on a job well done.
  2. Pen a ‘thank you’ note to your colleague, friend, sister, mother – or any influential woman in your life.
  3. Watch a movie that has a strong female lead (some of our favourites include Erin Brockovich, The Hunger Games, Matilda, Amelie & The Silence of the Lambs)
  4. Learn about famous & inspirational women. For some close-to-home inspiration, we highly recommend ‘Medicine Women’, which was released last year and features our very own Dr Helena Rosengren! It’s a compilation of pivotal and life-changing autobiographical stories by 20 female healthcare professionals. Talk about breaking the bias! (read more in Helena’s previous blog here)
  5. Strike the IWD #BreaktheBias pose. Cross your arms in solidarity and share on social media using #IWD2022 to spread awareness.

As an all-female team, we at Skinovation think it’s important to recognise International Women’s Day. Mobile casinos are popping up all over the net. These casinos offer first class gambling experience. You will have an access to most popular casino games including online pokies, no deposit bonus can be given in mobile casinos as well. If you want to find a good and reputable gambling venue, go to the onlinecasinos-australia.com where you will surely find what you like. We are constantly inspired by our (largely female) clientele, and appreciate the opportunity to bring a little extra confidence to your day.

However you choose to mark the occasion, we wish you a Happy International Women’s Day! From the Skinovation team:

Say Bye Bye To Tired, Droopy Eyes!

What is a Jett Plasma Lift?

The Jett Plasma Lift is a revolutionary treatment that is used to stimulate collagen production and make your skin firmer, without going under the knife! This treatment creates an immediate tightening and collagen production, especially in areas that are harder to treat.

While the Jett Plasma Lift can be used on any part of the skin, this treatment is specifically known as an effective method to ‘lift’ droopy upper eyelids. The skin around the eyes is quite vulnerable as it is very thin and loses elasticity faster than the rest of your face. This can be a pesky area as it is impossible to conceal and can unfortunately broadcast one’s age.

Unlike many other plasma devices available, the Jett Plasma device used in this treatment uses a direct current (DC) rather than an alternating current which can not only scan the skin but also pinpoint certain areas. As such, this device is more versatile and can be used to cover larger areas.

Jett Plasma is a medical device that can only be operated by trained health professionals, so know you will be in safe hands with Skinovation.

How does it work?

The Jett Plasma treatment uses ‘plasma’, which is a slightly ionized gas that becomes charged and works to vapourises and ‘sublimates’ excess skin.

The heat generated from the Jett Plasma device creates a response in the skin that effectively boosts collagen production and tightens the skin.

What is it like?

A local anesthesia will be provided, either in the form of numbing cream or an injection (depending on the treatment area). For instance, for a non-surgical eye lift your doctor will generally apply numbing cream while an anaesthetic injection is required for mole or wart removals.

As the Jett Plasma uses heat on the treatment areas, it may cause slight discomfort, but this feeling should subside as soon as the procedure is over. However, since the eye and mouth areas are more sensitive, they may be more painful.

What Can Jett Plasma Treat?

As Jett Plasma does not require you to go under the knife, this treatment offers a great non-surgical alternative to many skin conditions that would otherwise require surgery.

This procedure can be used to:

  • Reduce ‘droopiness’ in the upper and lower eye areas
  • Remove deep wrinkles or creases around the mouth and eyes
  • Remove of warts, skin tags and fibromas
  • Improve acne scarring
  • Reduce pigment spots
  • Skin tightening and lifting on the face, neck and body
  • Hand rejuvenation

What are some other benefits?

Aside from creating a lifted effect, we can’t forget that this treatment also boosts collagen production which promotes long-term skin rejuvenation.

Another benefit of this treatment is that most procedures can be done in under an hour and produce results that can last up to five years.

As touched on above, the Jett Plasma device uses a direct current, which has been found to be more beneficial than other alternating current devices. Direct current allows for better control and the ability to deliver a continuous flow of plasma that allows for more coverage. While on the other hand, alternating current devices can only ‘dot’ the skin. Furthermore, the direct current does not create as much damage as the traditional dot method.

Skinovation is the only cosmetic clinic in Townsville that offers this state of art treatment, so if you’re looking to start your skin journey WITHOUT going under the knife, book in a consultation with us here.

Dr Helena with book

A career highlight in ‘Medicine Women’

As many of you may know, I had the honour of being asked to contribute a chapter to ‘Medicine Women’, which was released on 18 July. Already a bestseller in Amazon’s biography category, Medicine Women is an inspiring compilation of short autobiographical stories by 20 female healthcare professionals from around the world, ranging from doctors, psychologists and naturopaths.

While the beautifully written chapters are refreshingly different to each other, each author shares intimate moments that have been pivotal or even life changing. Some chapters include stories of personal tragedy, others touch on the prejudices experienced in the profession. Writing my own chapter, ‘’a sliding door moment’’, proved to be a cathartic experience, exploring my childhood and a traumatic event which proved to have a profound impact on my life.

Cathryn Mora, who compiled and edited the book, said “Reading the stories in this book moved me to tears multiple times. The responsibility of caring for the lives of others and delivering difficult news, all while coping with sexism, stress, and challenges on the personal front, including illness, sexual assault, miscarriage, natural disasters, and strained relationships.”

Here’s some quotes from some of the incredible women who have shared their wise words and experiences in Medicine Women:

“I wrote about my experience of being a patient in ICU with septic shock following an IVF miscarriage. My story highlights the challenges women face when juggling careers and the desire to have children. Most career progression occurs in the years women are more fertile, leaving us with a difficult choice: prioritise career advancement and risk infertility, or have children early and accept loss of financial independence and delayed career progression.

I am so proud to have my work included in this anthology alongside my 19 co-authors. These women have all achieved so much, despite many having backgrounds of considerable adversity or personal trauma. Their stories are an inspiring example of what women can achieve, despite the challenges and prejudices we often face.”

Dr. Anne Stark, Consultant Psychiatrist at the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital

“Having “permission” to immerse myself in my life journey, to connect with deep and buried emotions, to explore how my life experiences impact me as a person and as a doctor was a defining experience – it has helped me grow in courage, confidence, and self-acceptance. Writing for the book Medicine Women legitimised that which I may otherwise have put aside as self-indulgent – oh, how I would have missed out!”

Dr Faye Jordan, Consultant Paediatric Emergency Medicine

Reviews

The response to Medicine Women has been overwhelmingly positive, with the book currently rated 4.8 out of 5 on Amazon.

“Wow, It’s been a while since I picked up a book that I just couldn’t put down. A “just one more chapter” book. I found myself reading late into the night, at lunchtime, sharing excerpts with my voice catching and my eyes brimming – you’ll need tissues! It also left me burning at the blatant and insidious prejudices they face as women in medicine.

Their different perspectives, and writing styles keeps it fresh, and their unvarnished honesty keeps it authentic.Their stories pricked my heart, and also left me reeling in awe of their tenacity and strength. This is a book that needs to be read and shared.”

Melissa H (Australia)

“I am a middle aged white guy doctor who is truly in love with these stories. Each is an incredible insight to what it means to work in medicine, and each is also an incredible insight to being a woman, in medicine… it is beautiful and funny across the board.”

Peter Rizzo (Australia)

Medicine Women has also garnered positive attention from different media outlets and websites.

It is my sincere wish that this incredible book may encourage others to step out of the box created by the challenging setbacks and prejudices they have experienced to fully embrace what truly inspires them while honouring their authentic selves, innate abilities and talents.

Happy reading!

Celebrating International Women’s Day

Today is International Women’s Day, a whole day to celebrate the awesome achievements of our sisters, mothers, colleagues and friends. At Skinovation, we’re passionate about celebrating everything wonderful about our fierce community of females. Whether you have a morning tea to celebrate, or just take time to reflect, we want to remind you this International Women’s Day, that you are a strong, powerful, and beautiful woman.

The theme of this year’s International Women’s Day is Women in Leadership: Achieving an Equal Future in a Covid-19 World. The United Nations Women’s Executive Director Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka said,

“We need women’s representation that reflects all women and girls in all their diversity and abilities, and across all cultural, social, economic and political situations. This is the only way we will get real societal change that incorporates women in decision-making as equals and benefits us all.”

At Skinovation, we totally agree with this! Our 100% female team includes five incredibly talented and experienced professionals:

  • Dr Helena Rosengren – MBChB, FRACGP, FACSCM, FSCCA, MMed, MPHTM, DRCOG
  • Maree – Registered Nurse
  • Laura – Registered Nurse
  • Aleisha – Practice Manager / Client Liaison
  • Angela – Clinic Supervisor/ Client Liaison

Supporting Townsville’s women of all ages

We are passionate about helping women to look and feel their best. As Estee Lauder said, “Confidence breeds beauty”. Ultimately, many of our clients often approach us to improve their self-confidence, allowing them to tackle the day as the most confident version of themselves.

We are also passionate about supporting women of all ages through our sponsorships of important programs. Last year, we invested in the personal development conference called Choose You Empowerment Event. Choose You was all about making yourself, and your own goals a priority. As women, we spend a lot of time caring for the important people in our lives, but often our own self-care takes a backseat. Therefore, investing in events like this help to remind ourselves that our own goals and health are important.

Our self image is developed from a young age, so that’s why we think it’s important to help young women in our community to feel empowered and enhance their own positive self esteem. At Saint Margaret Mary’s College, we supported a 12 week ‘self love makeover’ program called the Big Sister Experience. The pressures of social media and the perceived need to be perfect all the time make can have a terrible impact on the mental health of young women. Developing positive self esteem as a teen is a pathway to success as they come into adulthood.

As we come into 2021, we’re constantly looking for new ways to invest in our beautiful community of women in Townsville.

Don’t just take today to celebrate yourself and the powerful community of females you surround yourself with. Remember each and every day that your contribution as a woman is important.

Happy International Women’s Day from the team at Skinovation!

How to counter sagging jowls

The development of sagging jowls is an unfortunate part of ageing that few of us can escape.

As our skin becomes less elastic with age, it’s only natural that our chin and neck should begin to droop. However, this may be countered with a procedure called a thread lift.

What is a Thread Lift?

Thread Lifts are an effective, minimally invasive and safe way to achieve a natural-looking mini facelift. Through elevating and suspending skin tissue, they can restore the youthful appearance of a lifted face and neck.

Thread lift results
Before and after thread lift

How Does a Thread Lift Work?

A thread lift works by gently inserting soft, finely barbed threads to subtly but visibly lift the treatment area – commonly the jowls, neck or face. Most modern thread lifts employ dissolvable threads, which absorb steadily over several months. As this happens, the body creates natural tissue that permanently suspends the skin in place, while also improving firmness, colour, tone, and texture.

How Long Does a Thread Lift Take?

Typically, a thread lift procedure takes between 60 to 90 minutes, depending on the number of threads required. No general anaesthetic is required, and you can return home straight away.

How Long Does Recovery Take?

Unlike conventional facelifts, there is no removal of skin involved in a thread lift. This means the procedure does not leave scars, although most patients will experience some mild redness, soreness or swelling.

Some after-procedure care is essential, including taking 1-2 weeks off strenuous activities such as exercise, sleeping semi-upright for a few weeks and, in the case of neck threads, wearing a supportive brace for the initial weeks.

How Can I Get the Best Results From a Thread Lift?

Since thread lifts are minimally invasive, it’s possible to combine them with other nonsurgical treatments to maximise cosmetic outcomes.

Some people may choose to add dermal fillers or muscle relaxants to their treatment plan. Another popular alternative is to team a thread lift with a form of skin rejuvenation therapy, such as medical microneedling or peels to hydrate, lift and firm skin.

Say goodbye to unwanted moles

Do you have moles, skin tags or raised blemishes that you wish would just disappear?

You don’t need to put up with pesky spots that catch on your clothing or make you feel self-conscious, because they can be removed without the need for stitches and with little to no scarring.

What is mole ablation?

Mole ablation (also known as Radiofrequency ablation) is an innovative technique for removing innocent but unwanted raised blemishes.

A trained doctor or nurse will begin the procedure by gently numbing the treatment area. Then, they will direct gentle radio waves to the spot using a small metal loop or probe. These radio waves will dissolve the tissue they come into contact with and, with a light feathering technique, smooth out the treatment area for a clean, clear cosmetic result.

After a week or two the treatment area will heal beautifully, leaving you confident and comfortable in your own skin.

How long does mole ablation take to heal?

Mole ablation will leave a small graze, that typically takes a week to heal on the face and two weeks elsewhere.

For optimal cosmetic results, this graze should be kept sealed until it has completely healed over to avoid it drying out and scabbing.

Most of the time, it will be impossible to tell where the original site was. However, on rare occasions the treated area may heal with a depression or slightly different shade from the surrounding skin.

Is mole ablation permanent?

Generally, mole ablation is a one-time treatment that will permanently remove a mole or raised spot.

Occasionally an innocent raised spot can start to grow back. If this occurs, you should return for follow-up assessment. Your doctor may choose to do a biopsy or determine that it is completely safe to perform a second mole ablation treatment.

A word of warning

Unfortunately, skin cancers can come in many guises, and can be difficult to detect with the naked eye.

If there is any suspicion that the spot in question could be skin cancer, it must not be removed.

Instead, your doctor should carry out a detailed skin check using an instrument called a dermatoscope to properly identify the spot and determine a suitable course of treatment.

Chemical peels are better than they used to be

Have you considered a chemical peel recently?

Chemical peels are not what they used to be – they’re much better!

In the early days of chemical peels, we had to resign ourselves to painful, exposed skin; a red-raw complexion; and considerable downtime before enjoying the desired fresh, healthy glow.

It meant that the treatments quickly lost their early popularity as we all moved onto alternatives that were more conducive to a busy lifestyle.

But now, chemical peels are back in a much improved, modern manner that helps to hydrate, smooth and rejuvenate your skin without the downtime!

How have peels changed?

Thanks to cutting edge skincare technology chemical peels are re-emerging as a popular anti-ageing treatment.

While the chemical peels of yesteryear aimed to strip back the top layers of your skin to expose the brand new skin underneath; we now focus on infusing the skin with nourishing ingredients, stimulating new collagen production, and encouraging healthy skin cell growth instead.

These days, a galvanic peel is a relaxing skin treatment that can:

  • reduce fine lines
  • improve skin tone
  • even out skin colouring; and
  • deliver a radiant complexion.

We find a series of peels, interspersed with a galvanic infusion of progressive skincare products is a wonderful way to achieve optimal results.

Find out how chemical peels could improve your skin from Skinovation Cosmetic Clinic on Vimeo.

What is galvanic infusion?
Galvanic infusion gently drives a selection of progressive skincare products deep into your skin; markedly hydrating, softening and plumping the skin for a healthy glow. With the application of the right serums, it can also reduce unwanted pigmentation.

Advanced skin care from Skinovation Cosmetic Clinic on Vimeo.

So how do peels and galvanic infusion work together?

When combining chemicals peels and galvanic infusion, we use an alternating regime of a chemical peel in the first week, followed by galvanic infusion the second. In week three, we return to a chemical peel with a slightly stronger formulation, followed by galvanic infusion again the next week, and so on.

We find that three peel and galvanic infusion cycles are especially effective (that’s a total of six treatments over six weeks).

What sort of recovery time should you expect?

Any redness or peeling following a peel or infusion treatment tends to be minimal and a special healing mineral make-up can be applied straight after the treatment allowing you to go about your day as if nothing has been done.

If you think these skin treatments sound right for you, contact us today to book a galvanic infusion cycle and see the difference!
