Redefine your smile with a Lip Lift

Have you heard of the Lip Lift? A new trend in dermal filler injections, the Lip Lift (sometimes also called Edge Fillers) can help to give you a wider smile by upturning the corners of your lips!

What is the difference between regular lip filler and a Lip Lift?

Usually, dermal fillers are injected into the centre of your lips to create volume and a plumper shape. The Lip Lift procedure targets the injections at the edges and outer corners of your mouth. This series of strategically placed injections at an upward angle helps to lift your lips and redefine your smile!

What can a Lip Lift help with?

If your lips have a natural downturn, you might struggle to look happy when you smile. As you age, gravity and volume loss might worsen the problem. This can cause you to look permanently grumpy and may affect your self-confidence and social life. Lip Lift or Edge Filler can gently correct this problem to give you a wider and more natural-looking smile – for the ultimate happy lips!

Why do your lips droop at the edges?

Due to gravity and natural collagen loss as you age, the skin in areas of high muscle movement (like the mouth) can become thin and lose volume and eventually wrinkle and sag. Repeated muscle movements like smiling and frowning can make the issue worse. A quick Lip Lift is a great way to reverse these effects of ageing and restore a fuller smile.

Can you add a Lip Lift to your usual lip filler treatment?

Yes, we recommend that patients add a Lip Lift to their usual dermal filler treatment targeted at the centre of the lips to avoid bumpy or uneven results and to balance your entire lips.

Lip Lift is ideal for balancing out your mouth’s outer edge after receiving fillers in the centre of your lips.

What is injected into your face?

Dermal fillers come in a variety of materials and are used to subtly improve the appearance of the ageing face by smoothing fine lines and wrinkles as well as replacing some of the volume loss that occurs as we lose fat from various parts of our face while we age.

Filling material is sourced from naturally occurring substances found in the human body. Our dermal filler products are from reputable companies based in Australia, FDA approved, and incorporate either hyaluronic acid or calcium hydroxyapatite. The choice of dermal filler depends on the area to be treated, the depth of filling required, the effect desired, and the characteristics individual to each patient’s face.

Lip Lift fillers are semi-permanent, lasting between six and 12 months. We advise a step by step, minimalistic, gradual approach to achieve subtle and beautiful results over time.

9 things to know before getting lip filler

Are you considering lip filler but not sure what to expect? We’ve answered the nine most common questions our patients ask about dermal filler for the lips, including who should get it, what the treatment involves, and what happens afterwards!

Read on for everything you need to know about lip filler.

1. Is lip filler suitable for me?

When it comes to lip enhancement, everyone is looking for something different! Some people want fuller or more symmetrical lips, others want to fix their smile, while many people hope to erase the lines and wrinkles from around their mouth.

Lip filler is ideal for anyone looking to subtly enhance the shape of thin or asymmetrical lips for a fuller, plumper, more natural-looking smile, with subtle and long-lasting results.

2. What is being injected into my face?

Dermal fillers come in a variety of materials and are used to subtly improve the appearance of the ageing face by smoothing fine lines and wrinkles as well as replacing some of the volume loss that occurs as we lose fat from various parts of our face while we age.

Filling material is sourced from naturally occurring substances found in the human body. They are classified as temporary, semi-permanent or permanent. Our dermal filler products are from reputable companies based in Australia, FDA approved, used extensively in Europe and the USA, and incorporate either hyaluronic acid or calcium hydroxyapatite. The choice of dermal filler depends on the area to be treated, the depth of filling required, the effect desired, and the characteristics individual to each patient’s face. We advise a step by step, minimalistic, gradual approach to achieve subtle and beautiful results over time.

3. Who will perform my dermal filler procedure?

Dermal fillers are strictly delivered by our experienced team of dermal clinicians, including Aesthetic Doctors and degree-certified Aesthetic Nurses and Dermal Therapists. Our team hold certifications specifically focused in aesthetic medicine and are very experienced in delivering these treatments, with patient safety and expectations as our top priority. As your treatment is delivered in a medical facility, we can address any unlikely complications that may arise.

4. What risks do I need to know about with lip filler?

The beauty of dermal fillers is that they are derived from naturally-occurring substances in the body, which minimises the risk to you. However, it is still essential to only receive lip filler from a qualified and experienced dermal clinician or doctor who will keep you safe, minimise potential complications, and maximise your results.

However, it is not uncommon to have bruising at injection sites for up to a week following treatment with dermal fillers. This can be alleviated using ice packs and topical arnica. A temporary sensational swelling can last anywhere between 12 hours to three days post-filler treatment. A reversal agent can be used to alleviate swelling. It is our practice to review our patients at two weeks post-treatment for further product placement if desired.

5. What does a lip filler treatment involve?

Before your lip filler treatment, you will need to see one of our dermal clinicians or doctors who will perform a cosmetic skin consultation with you and discuss your cosmetic concerns and the results you hope to achieve with lip filler. We will work with you to tailor a treatment plan that suits your budget, timeframe and desired outcomes, and we will walk you through what to expect from the treatment.

As part of the initial skin consultation, your dermal clinician will take photos of your face and discuss all treatment options regarding dermal fillers individualised to your facial shape, symmetry, skin type and age.

You will come in on another day for the lip filler treatment. We invite all patients to return for a review after two weeks post-treatment in case there is a need for a top up of filler, as we prefer to be conservative in the first treatment to achieve natural results.

6. Is lip filler painful?

Our team of dermal clinicians and doctors are experienced with minimising pain to optimise your comfort. We can use a topical numbing cream, ice presses and other pain relief methods to help ensure you have a safe and comfortable experience.

7. Is there any downtime after lip filler?

Most people return to work and their normal routine the next morning after treatment. We advise all our patients to undergo 20 minutes of LED light therapy (available at our clinics) immediately afterwards, which helps decrease bruising and promotes collagen remodelling.

8. How long does lip filler last?

Hyaluronic acid fillers can produce excellent results for a period of six months (for the more superficial fillers) and up to 12 months (for the deeper, more robust fillers) post-injection treatment!

9. How do I get started with lip filler?

If you would like to enhance your lips for a fuller, more natural-looking smile, give us a call or book online for a consultation with one of our dermal clinicians, and let’s get started tailoring your treatment plan!

Muscle Relaxants vs Dermal Fillers: Part 2

Muscle Relaxants and Dermal Fillers are two popular injectable options to reduce the telltale signs of ageing. How do you know which is right for you? Following on from the previous Muscle Relaxants blog, let’s explore Dermal Fillers in detail.

Injectables, Part 2: Dermal Fillers

Dermal fillers work differently from muscle relaxants.  While muscle relaxants work to address the ‘moving’ lines on the face, dermal fillers pay attention to the static, more permanent lines that develop as we age.

Dermal fillers can be used in the upper layers of the skins to soften visible fine lines without altering the natural contour of the face. Additionally, dermal fillers can also address frown and smile lines, hollow cheeks and eyes, as well as to lift the contours of the cheeks or jawlines.

What are they used for?

Dermal fillers are used at varying depths of the skin to address different concerns. There are the multiple dermal filler products available for various applications, such as:

Deeper fillers:

  • Fill the hollow areas in the cheeks
  • Lift the cheeks and jawline for a more youthful look

Medium depth fillers:

  • Subtly change the contours of your face by filling deep lines, skin folds and hollows
  • Lift corners of the mouth
  • Address frown and smile lines.

More superficial fillers:

  • Reduce or eliminate fine lines
  • Increase the fullness of the lips
  • Fill hollow areas under the eyes.

What are the benefits?

One major perk that comes along with opting for a temporary filler is that the procedures are typically pretty painless and you will notice the results quickly.

Additionally, dermal fillers can help to make your skincare routine more seamless. How so? Well, as dermal fillers smooth lines, folds and hollows on the face, this makes for an easier application of your skincare products.

What are the disadvantages?

After receiving your dermal filler injection, there is a chance that you will notice redness, swelling and/or bruising around the treatment area. However, these effects will subside in a few days.

How long do dermal fillers last?

This very much depends on the type of filler, the area of the body, and the individual. Generally, results can last anywhere from 6-24 months. We would discuss expected results as part of your initial consultation.

Which option is best for you?

Your aesthetic goals are the key criteria when deciding between muscle relaxants or dermal fillers. Before undergoing a treatment, we always recommend consulting with a trained medical practitioner to ensure that you select a treatment that is right for you.

Unlike some clinics, our injectable treatments are all performed by a highly skilled in-house doctor. Dr Helena Rosengren will discuss your concerns and desired/possible outcomes before administering the suitable treatment.  Book in a consultation here to help you achieve your skin goals!

What’s Best for Me: Muscle Relaxants or Dermal Fillers?

When we’re young, our skin is rich in hyaluronic acid, collagen and elastin. These elements work to keep our skin plump, firm and hydrated. However, as we age, our skin begins to produce less of these elements which causes our skin to become drier and less elastic. Sun exposure and gravity can also take a toll, causing skin to sag and wrinkles to form.

Muscle Relaxants and Dermal Fillers are two popular injectable options to reduce the telltale signs of ageing. But how do you know which is right for you? Over the next two blogs, we’ll give you the rundown on both of these treatments and how they might work for you.

Injectables, Part One: Muscle Relaxants

What are they?

Botulinum A muscle relaxants work to block signals between the nerves and muscles, so the injected areas do not contract. As a result, muscle relaxants help to minimise signs of aging by relaxing the muscles that cause facial expression lines such as forehead lines when you raise your eyebrows and crows’ feet when you smile.

What can they be used for?

Muscle relaxants are generally used to eliminate the visible lines or wrinkles that appear as your face naturally moves.

The most common treatment areas include:

  • The frowning area: the lines that are visible on your forehead when you raise your eyebrows.
  • Crow’s feet: The creases that appear around your eyes when you smile.
  • Bunny lines on the nose: These mostly appear when smiling.
  • Down turning of the corners of the mouth: These occur naturally as you age.
  • Strap muscles in the neck: These can be prominent when certain facial expressions are used.

What are the benefits?

As stated above, muscle relaxants work to minimise ‘moving’ lines and wrinkles. The results of this treatment are not instantaneous….but that’s not necessarily a bad thing. This gradual effect helps to ensure a subtle difference, making it difficult to detect that you’ve had work done.

What are the disadvantages?

When deciding which treatment is better suited to you, it’s important to weigh up the cons along with the pros.

While muscle relaxants work to reduce the lines and wrinkles that appear when your face is naturally moving, this treatment will unfortunately not work on the lines you see when your face is at rest. This means that if you have deep lines in your frown area, these do not disappear with this treatment. However, muscle relaxants will prevent the deepening of these lines when you frown.

While it is rare that you would experience complications when receiving this treatment from a skilled administrator, there are still some potential risks that you should be aware of. These risks include pain, tenderness, redness of the skin, infection and bruising around the injected areas. These issues will subside within a week after treatment.

How long do muscle relaxants last?

Muscle relaxants are a short-term cosmetic solution as the effects of this treatment generally lasts for around three months. However, this treatment can also last for six to eight months for some lucky people. Ultimately, the lifespan of this treatment will depend on the individual.

How Do Dermal Fillers Work?

We’ve taken some time to unpack the differences between injectables on our blog. It’s important to make it clear that muscle relaxants and dermal fillers are not interchangeable, as they work very differently to reduce the signs of ageing. The easiest way to distinguish them is by remembering that muscle relaxants work on ‘moving’ lines that appear with facial expressions, while dermal fillers address ‘static lines’ that remain even when our faces are resting.

DERMAL FILLERS

What are dermal fillers?

While muscle relaxants address ‘moving’ lines, dermal fillers address the static, more permanent lines that occur as we get older and our skin’s volume naturally begins to decrease.

Dermal fillers can be used in the upper layers of the skin to soften fine lines without changing the contour of the face, or they can be used more deeply to address smile and frown lines, hollowing cheeks and eyes, and to lift the contours of cheeks or jawlines.
