Our top five products in 2021

As you might expect, skincare is a hot topic of discussion in the Skinovation clinic, and we all love trying new skincare products!

These are the products we used all the time in 2021, and recommended to many of our clients as well. They are versatile, can be used on any skin type, and have a real impact on your skin’s appearance!

1. Derma Roller

This powerful little tool has become a regular part of our skincare routine. Used 2 to 3 times a week, the derma roller increases blood flow to the skin, naturally helping to remove toxins so it looks increasingly radiant with time. It also allows any face oils or serums to absorb more deeply. Hello, radiant skin! Find out more here.

2. Cacay Oil

This little-known oil is a natural superfood for your skin. It’s packed with nourishing vitamins and fatty acids… in fact, three times as much Vitamin A than rosehip oil, and 50% more Vitamin E than argan oil!

There are heaps of benefits to your skin (read about them here), but in a broad statement, Cacay Oil delivers maximum anti-ageing effects. We also love the fact that it’s sustainably sourced from the Amazon.

3. Everyday Face SPF50+

We can’t stress enough the importance of daily sunscreen application. Not only does facial sunscreen help prevent potentially life-threatening skin cancer, it also has proven anti-ageing effects.

Every morning after moisturising, we apply Everyday Face SPF50+, and then wait a few minutes before applying makeup. As a bonus, it works really well as a makeup primer! If you do not currently apply facial sunscreen every day, we encourage you to make this simple step your New Year’s Resolution. Your skin will thank you!

4. Synergie Skin

Okay, this is not one particular product, but a luxe skincare brand with a full suite of products. Synergie Skin was developed by an Australian female scientist with the philosophy of “Clean Science” – i.e. using science and nature in synergy to create highly effective, evidence-based, ethical skincare products. Be warned: once you start using Synergie, it’s hard to stop.

Available in the clinic, Synergie Skin introductory kits are the perfect way to try the range. While stocks last, we also have Synergie Skin BonBons – just $25 for two bestselling product minis!

5. Oxygenating Foundation

It’s makeup, but it works as skincare. This aloe-based foundation by Oxygenetix is like a breath of fresh air for your skin. It’s lightweight and allows your skin to breathe, but also offers a flawless texture and covers skin conditions such as acne. It’s also soothing and has healing properties, which is why we offer to apply it to our clients following certain treatments.

If you need any extra convincing, Oxygenating Foundation is used by celebs such as Kourtney Kardashian and Margot Robbie. You know they would only use the best!

microdermabrasion townsville

Why microdermabrasion remains a top treatment

Microdermabrasion remains one of our most popular treatments, and it’s not hard to see why! It’s a non-invasive, relatively quick procedure that renews and rejuvenates the overall appearance of your skin’s tone and texture. As a bonus, it’s an affordable option compared to many other cosmetic treatments.

How does it work?

Microdermabrasion uses a unique applicator that features an abrasive surface and the use of tiny crystal to deeply exfoliate your skin. In the hands of an experienced cosmetic nurse, this exfoliation process removes dead and damaged skin cells to reveal a fresher, more radiant appearance.

What skin issues can it address?

Microdermabrasion can be used to address a whole range of skin-related concerns, such as sun damage, hyperpigmentation, wrinkles, fine lines, active acne or uneven skin tone. It works extremely well to banish dull skin!

If you’re unsure whether microdermabrasion is the right treatment for you, we can firstly assess your skin to recommend the most suitable course of treatment.

How is it different to microneedling?

While both treatments rejuvenate the skin, they work quite differently. Microdermabrasion is a deeply exfoliating treatment that smooths the skin from within. In-clinic microneedling uses very fine needles to create tiny ‘holes’ in the skin, which trigger collagen production.

While not recommended to have both treatments at the same time, microneedling can be a good option to maintain a radiant complexion between microdermabrasion treatments.

Cosmetic nurse Marie performs microdermabrasion in our Townsville clinic.

How often can you have microdermabrasion?

At first, many people choose to start with weekly treatments for three sessions and then change to a monthly or six-weekly maintenance regimen. Once again, this is something our cosmetic nurses can discuss with you after assessing your skin. The regime will depend on your desired outcome and your skin’s tolerance.

How long does it take?

Microdermabrasion treatments takes around 15-30 minutes, depending on the condition of your skin and what areas are being targeted.

So, if you’re juggling a busy daily life, this is the perfect procedure to squeeze into your schedule.

What to expect after treatment?

Common side effects could include mild tenderness and redness. These generally disappear within a few hours. We can apply Oxygenetix aloe-enriched foundation to cover any redness and assist in your skin’s healing.

How long to see results?

After just one microdermabrasion treatment, you will notice a rejuvenated and brighter skin tone. Most clients have noted visible results immediately after their treatment.

24 hours after the initial treatment, the effects will become more pronounced as the skin settles from the procedure.

Simply put, microdermabrasion is one the most affordable rejuvenating treatments on the market. Over time, this procedure offers an economical and non-invasive way to resurface your skin, leading to a younger looking, radiant appearance.

At Skinovation, our microdermabrasion treatments are affordably priced at $130.

We also offer an ongoing clinic special: When you pay for 4 microdermabrasion treatments, the 5th treatment is free!

How Skincare is Connected to Wellbeing

Many of us may assume that skincare is only an aesthetic practice. However, a good skincare regimen has the potential to offer you a range of benefits that will boost your wellbeing.

Better skin can help you look better but more importantly can make you feel better. Read on to discover how your skincare routine can create a meaningful difference in your life.

The Brain-Skin Connection

Have you ever noticed why your cheeks go red when you feel embarrassed? This is because your brain and nervous system have a direct impact on the skin’s immune cells through various chemical messengers and receptors that respond to stress, anxiety, and other emotions.

Negative emotions such as stress and anxiety can have a direct impact on the quality of your skin. This is because how you feel relates to the way your body reacts. As such, the act of practicing a regular skincare routine will help instil the thought that you are giving your skin the care it needs. The mental association that ‘good skin will improve your mindset’ will help to connect your skincare routine with positive emotions. As a result, maintaining a regular skincare routine works to create a cycle that not only improves both your skin’s appearance but also your inner wellbeing.

Skincare is SELF CARE

Having a consistent daily skincare routine is a great way to practice self-care. By taking a moment from your day to cleanse and moisturise your skin, you are dedicating your time and complete attention to yourself.

More than this, your skincare routine can also do wonders for your mental health. A daily regimen works to provide structure, stability, and structure into your week. If everything else seems out of control and stressful in your life, it’s a few minutes set aside to spend some time on you.

Your daily skin routine also creates a time to practice mindfulness, which enables you to focus your thoughts on the present moment. According to research, mindfulness has been known to be linked to regulating emotions and reducing symptoms of depression and anxiety.

Keep Your Skin Nourished with The Right Ingredients

Your skincare routine will achieve the best results when paired with good nutrition and regular exercise. Foods such as broccoli, spinach, avocados, and sweet potatoes are packed with plenty of antioxidants that will not only help to revitalise the skin but also combat the visible signs of aging.

Antioxidants offer a range of benefits to your skin including:

  • Works to neutralise free radical production
  • Contains anti-inflammatory properties that prevent sun damage and enable your skin to correct visible damage.
  • Helps to brighten skin tone by stimulating melanin production.

Combining a balanced diet with regular exercise will help to get your blood pumping around the body. This helps to deliver the essential nutrients to the skin’s surface, which accelerates the healing process of your skin. When you work up a sweat this helps to flush out all the dirt and oils from the skin and keep your skin looking clear and bright.

Exercise also releases feel-good hormones like endorphins that regulate the stress hormone, cortisol that is responsible for oil production and inflammation.

Drink Plenty of Water

‘Keep hydrated’ may seem like overused advice but this is for good reason! Ensuring your skin is properly hydrated is a vital step in maintaining healthy and glowing skin.

Without sufficient water intake, skin can appear duller, and your wrinkles, spots and pores can appear more prominent. Hydration helps to make your skin appear plumper and boosts elasticity, which means it’s less likely to produce spots and blemishes.

Drinking at least 8 glasses a day will help to flush out the toxins in your body, unclog pores and keep your skin moisturised.

At Skinovation Cosmetic Clinic we believe in the holistic approach to skincare. If you would like to discover a skincare regimen that is best suited to your individual needs, please book with one of our trained nurses by calling us on 4775 5664 or click here.

5 Amazing Treatments To Naturally Boost Collagen Production

In the skin world, collagen is something that will never go out of fashion. But, what is it, really?

Well, collagen is one of the most abundant proteins found in your body to help keep your skin looking youthful and vibrant.  But that’s not all. Found in your bones, tendons and ligaments, collagen is one of the primary building blocks of your skin. Just think of collagen as a scaffolding structure that works to give firmness and elasticity to the skin.

Sadly, over time, collagen begins to break down faster than our body can replenish it. In fact, from our mid-20’s, we start to lose around 1% of our collagen per year and can lose up to 30% in the first years of menopause.

Not to fear though, there are plenty of natural treatments that help to boost collagen production and also work to keep your skin looking lush. Read on to discover a treatment that works for you…

1. Platelet Rich Plasma

Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) treatments are an injection treatment that involves drawing a small amount of blood and centrifuging it to separate the platelets from the red blood cells. The highly-concentrated plasma contains many anti-ageing properties that work to increase both collagen and elastin production when injected into specific areas of the face.

2. Hydrolyzed Collagen Supplements

If you’re not ready to head down the cosmetic treatment road, then there are numerous collagen-rich products that you can try at home.

One option to consider is hydrolyzed collagen supplements, which means the collagen has been broken down and easier to absorb. Mostly packaged as a powder, this option not only offers an easy way to incorporate collagen into your diet but also is the option your body absorbs the best.

Hydrolyzed supplements can be incorporated into your diets through coffee, tea, smoothies or any drink of your choice… AND, the good news is that powdered collagen is tasteless, so no need to worry about a nasty aftertaste.

Studies have shown that consuming collagen can increase skin elasticity, hydration, as well as promote dermal collagen density.  You won’t see instantaneous results from this option, but you will begin to notice that your skin is more plump and elastic after several weeks.

3. Micro-needling

microneedling

Micro-needling is a treatment method that is used to treat a number of skin conditions. This method involves using multiple tiny needles to puncture the skin and trigger our skin’s self repair process triggering more collagen to form in the skin. Micro-needling stimulates collagen production thereby rejuvenating aging skin.

4. Collagen Serums & Oils

serums

Collagen serums and oils are a good option to add to your skincare routine. It’s important to note that the collagen particles in these products are too large to absorb into the skin when applied topically. However, there are a few skincare ingredients that will work to stimulate collagen production topically. Serums that contain retinol (an active form of vitamin A) help to boost cell turnover, hydration, and of course, increase collagen production. The next go-to collagen boosting ingredient is vitamin C. In fact, collagen synthesis relies on vitamin C and supports the body’s natural ability to produce collagen.

If you’re looking for a recommendation, we suggest adding Cacay Oil to your skincare routine. Cacay Oil contains wonderful skin-nourishing essential acids and vitamins such as retinol, vitamin E and linoleic acid (vitamin F).  As Cacay Oil is so rich in natural goodness, it helps to reduce wrinkles and pigmentations as well as boosting collagen production which helps to smooth and brighten the skin. If you want to read more about the advantages of Cacay Oil, read this blog.

The additional use of a 0.25mm home derma-roller immediately before or after application of your quality serums will assist with deeper skin absorption so your products can be up to 40 times more effective. Derma rolling should only be done on clean skin and we suggest night time use only so the skin heals fully before use of makeup and sunscreen. Click here for more info on derma rollers, or watch below for an instructional video.

5. Red Light Treatment

rlt

Red Light Treatment (RLT) is a low-level light therapy that applies a low-energy red and near-infrared light to the body. It’s a completely natural, non-invasive method that heals your skin, muscle tissues, and other body parts on a cellular level.

RLT is a popular choice for those who are looking to improve the health and appearance of the skin. Why is that? RLT boosts blood flow, which brings oxygen and nutrients to the skin cells to encourage healing and minimise inflammation. This treatment also stimulates the collagen-producing cells called fibroblasts which boosts your collagen production.

At Skinovation we are committed to helping our clients feel beautiful and achieve their skin goals. If you would like to talk more about our in-clinic collagen boosting solutions, you can book in a skin consultation with our friendly team here.

4 Simple Tips To Rejuvenate Your Skin During Winter

Winter can be quite unforgiving on your skin. The cooler, drier air can sadly rob you of your summery glow and leave your skin feeling dry, dull and uncomfortable.

But not to fear, you don’t have to endure dry and flaky skin all season long. There are a few super simple tips and tricks that you can add to your routine that will help you get back that glow in no time.

Show your skin some love with a Rejuvenation Treatment

If the winter weather has your skin feeling dull or dry, why not revitalise it with a rejuvenation treatment? Not only can these treatments help dehydrated skin and give your skin’s clarity a boost, they can also help with a range of other skin concerns (e.g. fine lines and wrinkles, the appearance of veins, unwanted pigmentation, and more). These rejuvenation treatments include:

  • Medical micro-needling. A proven treatment for increasing collagen under depressed scars.
  • Microdermabrasion. A gentle treatment for abrading dead skin cells to leave you with radiant skin.
  • Red Light Therapy. A soothing treatment that also can help rebuild collagen.
  • Fractional Therapy. A gentle option for treating fine lines and pigmentation.
  • Peels. An affordable but effective option for various skin conditions.
  • Platelet Rich Plasma. A natural treatment to generate collagen and prevent signs of ageing.
  • Galvanic Infusion. A relaxing treatment for powerful skin lightening.
  • Photodynamic Therapy. An effective treatment for precancerous sunspots and enhance collagen production.

Moisturise!

What is one of the best ways to keep warm in winter? Hot showers, for sure. While a long and steamy shower seems like a luxurious way to fight off the winter chills, excessive amounts of hot water can strip your skin of all its natural oils.  It only takes around 3 minutes for the moisture boost you receive from the shower to evaporate.

To help lock in that hydration boost, applying moisturiser should be your next step after drying off from the shower. So, make sure that you keep your bathroom cabinet stocked with your favourite moisturiser to remind you to apply while your skin is still damp.  This will help keep your skin healthy and lively.

Of course, a moisturising lip balm and hand cream are great to keep in your bag while you’re on the go. Apart from keeping chapped lips and hands at bay, balms/creams with a lovely scent bring a little ‘luxe’ to your every day!

Keep Hydrated

As the weather begins to cool down, our skin becomes drier and more sensitive. When it’s cold outside, we tend to forget to drink more water and this unfortunately strips our pores of the moisture it needs to maintain a healthy and radiant glow. Staying hydrated is an essential part of any skincare routine. How so? Well, water helps to conceal pores and wrinkles as well as helping to flush away any nasty toxins that can accelerate signs of aging. Not only this, water works to increase blood flow and provide your skin with all the nutrients it needs to recover. That’s why it’s important to keep hydrated.

To help keep your skin happy and hydrated it’s recommended that you drink at least 8-10 glasses per day. Now, that doesn’t need you to gulp these glasses down all at once! It’s more beneficial to continue to sip on water throughout the day. If you struggle to drink the recommended amount, read our top tips here.

Slip, Slop, Slap

In North Queensland, we don’t experience a ‘typical’ winter as the weather remains quite warm, and our UV index is still rated as ‘high’! When the temperatures drop, it’s easy to forget about applying sunscreen. Even in winter, it’s still important to shield yourself from harmful UVs that can take a toll on your skin if you’re not careful.

To keep those nasty UVs at bay, we would recommend using a sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or more to protect your skin. The best way to do this is to find a facial sunscreen you’re happy with, and apply it before applying your makeup. While your foundation or BB cream may contain SPF, usually the quantity required to be effective is far more than you would usually use. Then before you walk out the door, remember  to apply sunscreen to your arms, chest, and anywhere else that is likely to see the sun (even if it’s incidental exposure, such as while you’re driving).

It’s simply a matter of establishing a consistent daily habit! (And if you need further convincing: research shows daily sunscreen use actually reverses signs of ageing and existing damage!)

skin consultation

Cut through the confusion with a skin consult

Are you wanting to start looking after your skin and are finally ready to do something for yourself? A personalised skin consultation is a great place to start! Many of us live by a trial-and-error method of skin care, without taking the time to understand the underlying influences, or what products/treatments are actually best suited to our skin. However, it’s never too late to put your skin first and give it the best treatment possible by visiting a qualified cosmetic nurse, trained to identify and address a range of issues.

As unique individuals, we all have unique skin. Whether you’re concerned about fine lines, acne scarring, or pigmentation, there is no ‘one size fits all’ fix for concerns you may have about your skin. That is why we recommend a personalised skin consult for anyone who is thinking of taking the next step in their skin journey!

What happens during the consultation?

Your personalised skin consultation is conducted by one of our highly-trained cosmetic nurses.  During the 30 minute session, we gain an understanding of your skin concerns, and what would be a realistic solution to suit your lifestyle. Some of the questions we go through include:

  • What is it that bothers you about your skin?
  • What would you like to change?
  • What is your current skin regime like?

By clarifying points such as these in your own mind before you arrive, you will be able to better communicate with your nurse what it is you wish to achieve. Similarly, you should reflect on the level of commitment you are prepared to make, both financially and with regards to your time.

With so many treatments and products available on the market, we understand that it can be easy to get overwhelmed. Through a personalised skin consultation, our highly trained cosmetic nurse will help cut through the confusion and prescribe a course of treatments and products that are both safe and effective.

What happens after?

Need time to think about what is next for your skin? No worries! When walking away from your personalised skin consult, we will provide you with product samples, so you can try them out without having to make any major investment. Many of our clients see results within a week. Alongside these samples, we’ll give you our treatment menu with your personalised recommendations. We give you the time, information and a realistic price guide so you can accurately assess your options.

The best part of our job is being able to see the progression in our clients’ skin. From the very beginning at your initial skin consult to the end of your treatment, we notice not only the physical difference in your skin, but also the confidence you gain as a result.

Whether you have fine lines, wrinkles, dull skin, acne, sun damage, pigmentation, textured skin, or any concern at all, we have a tailored solution to suit you. 2020 Trends: Skincare is the new lipstick

Have you ever heard of the ‘lipstick effect’? Historically, booming lipstick sales are normally an indicator of a crisis or economic downturn. Lipstick is seen as an affordable luxury during tough times instead of more extravagant purchases. Following COVID-19, this trend did not continue but another rose in its place: face masks, exfoliants, and all things skincare!

Like many other businesses across Australia, the necessary closure of beauty and cosmetic clinics (such as ours) prevented Australians from keeping up with their usual professional treatments. Instead, consumers embraced skincare and at-home treatments in a big way. In fact, it seems we were somewhat beauty-obsessed during the first months of lockdown!

With the ease of online shopping during lockdown, and an obvious desire to nurture self care through skin care, sales figures revealed:

  • A 520% increase year-on-year in beauty product sales and a whopping 600% rise in skincare for department store Myer
  • A 61.2% increase in face mask sales and 62.7% increase in exfoliant sales through major online cosmetic retailer Adore Beauty
  • 55% revenue growth for popular skincare range Sukin

Also in 2020…

Another trend we’ve noticed over the last year is (finally!) the acceptance of sunscreen as an integral part of skincare. Instagram influencers, online bloggers and beauty websites are spruiking the benefits of daily sunscreen application and sharing sunscreen reviews (check out the Australian Instagram profiles of  @mandylikes_, @ms_hannah_e and @thelifeofclaire_).

We can only say hallelujah! Not only does sunscreen have obvious health benefits with a hugely decreased risk of skin cancer, but it is the best anti-ageing tool in the skincare arsenal. Our clients love the Hamilton SPF50+ tinted Everyday Face Cream which has a beautiful matte finish and acts as a primer for make-up. It does not contain water proofing so it will not be suitable if you’re an outdoor worker or going swimming. It’s available for just $16.95 in our clinic or here.

What’s in store for this year?

As we’re settling into 2021, we can only ponder on what this year might hold in store. Riding the skincare wave post-lockdown, Australians have been seeking professional advice and treatments to expand on their self-care routines started at home. We (and others in the industry) have seen an increase in demand for minimally invasive procedures such as microdermabrasion or galvanic infusions.

If you would like a professional assessment and find a routine best suited to address your particular skin concerns, please book with one of our trained nurses by calling us on 4775 5664 or click here.

Have you discovered the benefits of Cacay Oil yet?

Imagine a skincare product that is 100% pure, 100% natural, good for you and good for the planet.

Now stop imagining – because we have recently added a product that ticks all of those boxes to our retail range here at Skinovation Cosmetic Clinic.

We are very excited, after years of research, to introduce you to Cacay Oil, a natural superfood for your skin that boasts proven anti-ageing properties and will give you a glowing complexion.

What is Cacay Oil?

Cacay Oil is a new, natural anti-ageing oil that skincare experts are amazed by.

The oil is made from the Cacay nut, which grows naturally in the Amazon regions of South America. Cacay Oil is highly rich in a perfect combination of vitamins and fatty acids that will set to work regenerating your skin thereby reduce fine lines, blemishes and loss of firmness within weeks, leaving your skin glowing.

Cacay Oil is extremely rich in natural retinol (vitamin A), vitamin E and linoleic acid (vitamin F) containing far more than most other natural oils worldwide.

So, how does Cacay Oil compare to other natural oils?

Argan oil and rosehip oil are well known, popular natural skin care products that you have no doubt heard of. By comparison cacay oil has 1.5 times the vitamin E of both argan oil or rosehip oil and 3 times as much vitamin A as rosehip oil (argan oil has none at all).  When it comes to linoleic acid, cacay oil has almost double the linoleic acid of rosehip oil and 2.5 times that of argan oil.

Natural retinol (vitamin A) helps reduce wrinkles and pigmentation while boosting collagen thereby plumping, smoothing and brightening the skin. Because this is a natural form of retinol it can be used during the day while in the sun. Vitamin E locks in hydration and helps reduce any visible scarring. Linoleic acid helps with easy absorption of this miracle oil thereby locking in moisture while leaving the skin feeling smooth and non-greasy.

How will Cacay Oil improve my skin?

Being so rich in skin-nourishing vitamins and essential fatty acids twice-daily use of Cacay Oil will provide visible improvement to your skin’s clarity, plumpness and texture within the first few weeks of use.

The benefits of this wonder oil will be amplified by using a dermaroller either immediately before or after its application.

The benefits of Cacay Oil include:

  • Rapid skin absorption
  • Reducing wrinkles
  • Improving skin elasticity
  • Improving skin tone
  • Reducing the formation of acne
  • Reducing the appearance of scars and stretch marks
  • Reducing pigmentation
  • Improving skin texture; and
  • Increasing skin hydration and smoothness

How is Cacay Oil good for the planet?

While a large percentage of Cacay Oil is currently being processed from nuts gathered from wild-grown trees, the increasing popularity and economic potential of the product is encouraging farmers to replant native Cacay trees in deforested areas of Amazon rainforest.

These trees are fast growing and add nutrients back into the soil as they grow. The budding industry is also helping to improve the lives of low-income families in Amazon regions by creating more employment opportunities.

Additionally, no part of the harvested Cacay nut goes to waste. Once the oil is extracted, the remaining flesh is processed into ground flour for various uses and  the inner peel is composted for improved productivity of local agriculture.

Our team at Skinovation Cosmetic Clinic is proud to support the production and promotion of this wonderful natural product, which not only benefits you, but also the indigenous Amazonian people and our planet.

We encourage you to try Cacay Oil for yourself and let us know what you think.

Available in our clinic (70 Mooney St Gulliver) or shop online – free Click & Collect available!

What can I do about pigmentation?

If you have an uneven skin tone characterised by discolouration, dark spots or brown patches it’s highly likely you’re dealing with pigmentation.

Pigmentation is a very common skin concern, which can usually be improved.

There are many common skincare products you can incorporate into your daily skin care routine, as well as some more powerful treatments, that can help you regain a more even skin tone.

DAILY PIGMENTATION FIGHTERS:

Slip, slop, slap.
When your skin isn’t busy fighting off the immediate effects of the sun, it has the chance to set about repairing past sun damage. That means sunscreen, a hat and long sleeves aren’t just protecting you from sun burn and skin cancer right now, they’re also helping your skin to undo damage that’s already done. To acheive younger, smoother, more even coloured skin, simply get into the habit of putting on sunscreen each morning and covering up whenever you’re outdoors.

A, B and C serums
Serums are highly-concentrated products, typically rich in vitamins A, B or C, that can be a powerful tool in the fight against pigmentation, as well as many other skin concerns including fine lines, dryness, acne scarring and large pores. You can learn more about how to best use serums on our blog post here.

Hydroquinone
Hydroquinone is a skin lightening agent that can be used for a more severe form of pigmentation, known as hyperpigmentation. While hydroquinone rarely causes unwanted side-effects, it does tend to work better for certain skin types including people with normal or oilier skin and those with fairer skin tones. For some people, hydroquinone can in fact exacerbate hyperpigmentation. In Australia you can only access hydroquinalone through a medical practitioner with an interest in pigmentation concerns.

POWERFUL PIGMENTATION TREATMENTS

Peels
There are cosmetic peels available for all sorts of skin problems, including peels designed specifically to reduce the appearance of pigmentation. Peels work by removing the outer layer of dead skin cells to speed up the generation of younger, plumper looking skin. While they can be used as one off treatments, peels have been found to deliver much better results more quickly when used at fortnightly intervals over a couple of months. You can learn more about the power of peels here

Fractional Laser
Laser therapy can be used as an anti-ageing treatment for fine lines and pigmentation on the face, neck, décolletage and backs of hands. While other laser treatments might leave you feeling raw for several weeks, fractional laser is a gentler option that can be used at monthly intervals to deliver the same end result with a much shorter recovery time than other laser treatments.

Galvanic skin infusion
A relaxing, pampering treatment, galvanic infusion also allows deep skin absorption of powerful skin lightening and anti-ageing products.

There is an array of treatment options available for helping you reduce pigmentation and other skin concerns. If you’re confused or overwhelmed by all of the options, you may like to discuss your treatment options with a medical practitioner who can help you decide on a tailor-made approach for your particular needs.

The team at Skinovation Cosmetic Clinic would happy to consult you on your options.

Serums and Dermal Rollers – The Ultimate Age-Fighting Duo

Batman and Robin.
Wine and Cheese
Coffee and a great book.

There is no denying some things are just better in pairs; and when it comes to skin care there is no better duo than an anti-ageing serum and a dermal roller.

How do anti-ageing serums work?

Unlike creams or lotions, serums are highly-concentrated products rich in active ingredients – typically Vitamin A, B and C – and containing fewer ‘filler’ ingredients. Serums have been clinically proven to reduce pigmentation and fine lines, firm the skin, maximise skin health and ultimately slow down the ageing process. This means they are highly effective at delivering a knock-out punch to some of your skin’s greatest nemeses including dryness, fine lines, acne scarring, pigmentation and large pores.

How do I incorporate a serum into my existing skin care regimen?

Serums work best when added to your existing skin care routine, which may already include cleansing and moisturising. This one extra step is most definitely worth the effort, especially if you are over the age of 40 and starting to notice the tell-tale signs of ageing skin. For best results, apply your serum immediately after cleansing to warm, slightly moist skin. You can then proceed with moisturiser, sunscreen and finally make-up as you usually would.

Do skin care products containing serums really work? from Skinovation Cosmetic Clinic on Vimeo.

What are the benefits of using a dermal roller?

Dermal rollers are an easy to use, at-home skin microneedling tool. Their heads contain hundreds of tiny 0.25mm pin heads which, when run gently over the face create microscopic holes or channels in the skin. The benefits of this action are two-fold: firstly, the microneedling stimulates the skin’s healing process, encouraging plumping, tightening and thickening; secondly, the channels allow skin care products, like serums, to penetrate more deeply into the skin.

So how do serums and dermal rollers work together to fight ageing?

Dermal rollers have been found to improve the effectiveness of serums and moisturisers by up to 40% because they enable active ingredients in skin care products to reach beyond the superficial layers of the skin and deep into where they can do the most good. When added to the natural Collagen and Elastin boosting effects of dermal rolling, this can improve the appearance of uneven skin tone, acne scarring, fine lines and wrinkles.
